Your work matters.

Your website should too.

Practical websites for independent businesses who’ve built something great and love what they do - and would rather be doing anything but promoting themselves online.

Sounds like you?

As we say in Yorkshire: give it here.

You’ve built something great. People love your work.

But right now, your website tells a different story.

Maybe you don't have one yet. You've been getting by on word of mouth and social media and it's working up to a point. But you know you’re missing people.

Or you have a site, but it went up quickly in the early days and it's never quite reflected what you've actually built. The online shop runs and there’s a nice paragraph about how passionate you are, but otherwise it reads a lot like everyone else's small business website.

If people can’t tell who you’re for and why you’re different, they hesitate. They might even decide that you're 'not quite right' for them - that's quite galling when you know that you absolutely are!

The trouble is, fixing it keeps getting bumped down the list. It sounds boring at best, and at worst you're picturing hours of writing pretentious twaddle about yourself and being shoehorned into a pushy sales site.

But meanwhile, people who would love what you do…

…don’t find you.

It doesn’t have to be like that.

A Town Mouse website takes everything you've built - the warmth, the thought, the reason you started - and turns it into a clean, clear Squarespace site that speaks in your voice, shows what makes you different and makes it easy for visitors to say ‘yes.’

STARTING OUT

First Online Home

You’re just starting out; time and budget are tight. Social media isn’t quite cutting it, but you’re not really ready for a full website yet.

First Online Home gives you a clear, professional one-page presence, so people understand what you offer, see what makes you different, and know how to get in touch. It's intentionally simple and designed to be outgrown, but it's often the step that helps things feel real.

Best for: Brand-new businesses, side projects, student businesses, early local startups, small organisations and charities who need an online presence

READY TO GROW

Mini Site

You're running a small business and it's really important that people landing on your site quickly get what you do, who you're for, and what to do next.

A Mini Site gives you a focussed, strategic website that answers those questions, earns trust quickly, and makes it easy for customers to take the next step.

Professionally written. Mobile-first design. No unnecessary complexity.

Best for: Tutors, therapists, coaches, freelancers, trades, and small local services with one clear offer, ready to look established online.

DOING SERIOUS WORK

Full Site

A simple website is starting to hold you back. You've got more to offer, more to say, and you need your website to really do some work for you.

Time for a professionally written, mobile-ready website of typically 4–5 pages, including a dedicated Bio page written to show who you are and why that matters to your customers. You can include a booking system and email marketing integration, and a simple online store.

Best for: Established sole traders, multi-service businesses, and growing teams,  including consultants, clinics, studios, and specialist trades

It’s so easy to create your website…

When you’ve chosen your Town Mouse package and your Squarespace subscription, it’s plain sailing.

  • Step 1

We talk. A questionnaire and kick-off call collects everything I need and make sure I'm getting off on the right foot.

  • Step 2

I build. I write, design and create your website and send it over to you.

  • Step 3

We refine. You give feedback until you're happy with words and design.

  • Step 4

It's yours. I transfer the website into your name and show you how to use it.

From that point, you own it entirely and run it yourself.

Why The Town Mouse?

Hi, I'm Lisa: the human writer behind The Town Mouse Writing Company. I write copy and design Squarespace websites for small businesses who've put a lot of themselves into what they do, and want that handled with care.

When I work with clients, I ask a lot of questions and listen properly to the answers. I give people room to think out loud. There's often a bit of circling at first, but that's fine. I pull the threads together so you can read it back and say, "Yes. That's what I meant."

I'm not interested in filling your website with impressive-sounding phrases that don't actually say very much. If something looks beautiful but feels slightly hollow, I'll nudge us back to what matters: how your customer will feel, and why that's important. It might mean the odd slightly awkward conversation, but it's always in service of getting it right.

Alongside the copy, I build straightforward, well-considered Squarespace websites with thoughtful design that gives your words space to do their job.

The Town Mouse Writing Company is named after a story about choosing a life, a vision and values that suit you, rather than chasing what other people think you should have. That's the thread running through my work. The aim isn't to give you the website you're "meant" to have; it's to help you build the one that actually fits.

If you're creating something with care, want your website to sound like you on your best day, and can't be doing with faff, we'll likely get on just fine.
